Originally built as a mud fort in the 17th century, it was later rebuilt using massive granite blocks by Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore in the 18th century. The renovation was supervised by Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval commander who later served as the Chief of the Travancore Army.
The fort is built around an isolated hillock and spans about 90 acres. It includes an old foundry used for casting guns and a 16-foot-long brass gun that could not be moved even with the help of 16 elephants. Inside the fort, you can find the tombs of De Lannoy, his wife, and his son, located within a partly ruined chape.
Recently, the fort has been turned into a biodiversity park by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, featuring a variety of flora, fauna, and avifauna. Udayagiri Fort is a historic fort located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated about 14 km from Nagercoil and 34 km from Kanyakumari, near the town of Thuckalay.
